For one thing I'm a strong believer in this being plenty high enough quality! it's very listenable, and way better than your average terrestrial radio signal.
Secondly I doubt that many artists would be all too happy when suddenly all their material becomes available to requests at any time in some silly high bitrate that means there's little point getting the Cd or buying the mp3.
Thirdly: Most Dj's net connections are capable of a stable 128kbit stream, but most aren't capable of more, especially the UK dj's who end up with awful DSL lines from British Telecom etc.

Most importantly: These streams cost us money, if you'd like to donate a relay to run at 192 Kbit we'd be more than happy to add it to the list of existing relays! But 128 makes more sense as you can have a lot more 128 listeners than 192 that's for sure, let alone any higher.

128 is the best imo . less would sound crap and higher wont make any much difference + reasons Guns gave .

x2 -- on rare occasions it will sound better.. for example: i usually stream in 192k ogg which is about same quality as 320k mp3, and there is an ogg relay you can tune into if you really want to maximize on the sound quality.

the ogg relay sounds better, its crisper and hits harder, i just tested the difference on my speakers/subs.

    128 is fine wit me

I live in the middle of butt f*ck Egypt (I.E. praticaly the middle of nowhere), And 128 is a godsend to me. I know of guys out here that get all of their tracks @ 128 and mix them @ the club. On the other hand I have a cable connection so "in theory" I could handle and appreciate an even better quality

Is it possible to stream the "now playing" information in the ogg-stream, too? If the MP3-stream is capable of doing so..

128 is certainly not bad for streaming! I've been to parties where I've heard 96kbp rips being played on a huge system; now THAT is brutal!
